Just north of the city of Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture are a small chain of short mountains called the "Utsunomiya Alps" (宇都宮アルプス). There are quite a few, but all relatively close together. On this hike, I climb both Mt. Kuroto (黒戸山) and Mt. Takadate (高館山). Both were fairly short and easy hikes, but quite beautiful. The hike was almost sidelined, as I encountered a landslide caused by last year's typhoon, that had yet to be cleared. Luckily, several hikers before had carved a trail over the landslide and I was able to go across and complete the hike. Someday soon, I will complete the entire Utsunomiya Alps chain in one go. Climbing Mt. Tage in Tochigi Prefecture - 多気山 (栃木県百名山75座)
With the weather being warmer than usual, I decide to take advantage of it and hike Tage-san in Tochigi Prefecture. Tage-san (多気山) (377m) is a small but historical mountain in Tochigi dating back to the year 822. It was one of the 100 famous mountains in Tochigi (栃木百名山). There are many festivals held at the shrine nearby, including a fire-walking festival each spring. Click these links! Hiking Mt. Otadaki & Mt. Fuji in Tochigi
I love hiking in Japan. There is a wealth of natural beauty to be explored all over the country. In Tochigi prefecture alone there are over 150 mountains that can be hiked. One of my goals this year is to hike as many of them as I can. I start off with Mt. Otadaki and Mt. Fuji near Utsunomiya.
