Just north of the city of Utsunomiya in Tochigi Prefecture are a small chain of short mountains called the "Utsunomiya Alps" (宇都宮アルプス). There are quite a few, but all relatively close together. On this hike, I climb both Mt. Kuroto (黒戸山) and Mt. Takadate (高館山). Both were fairly short and easy hikes, but quite beautiful. The hike was almost sidelined, as I encountered a landslide caused by last year's typhoon, that had yet to be cleared. Luckily, several hikers before had carved a trail over the landslide and I was able to go across and complete the hike. Someday soon, I will complete the entire Utsunomiya Alps chain in one go.
